RDog with bad breath has a reason to be. In other words there is always cause of why a dog has bad breath. And there are simple ways to get rid of the bad breath of a dog but first it’s important to know why does your dog have bad breath.(also called mitosis)

why do dogs have bad breath

First of all let me point ou⁴t that not all dogs get bad breath. And not washing their teeth is not the only cause of bad breath, it could also be because of a health problem like Hepatitis or diabetes and they all have solutions. Furthermore, you should always consult with your veterinarian to make sure your dog doesn’t have a health problem.

The most common reason for bad breath(mitosis)is the periodontal disease which are cause when you don’t clean your teeth and you start getting plaque which causes bacteria and eventually mockery between your teeth. And that causes bad breath. This can be fix by cleaning their teeth with, either a toothpaste specially for dogs not ours, or you could get a dog bone that are special to clean their teeth (which most vet don’t remand it),or give them a raw carrot to chew on. While the dog chews the carrots their teeth will get cleaner and get rid of the bad breath(mitosis). Another option is to give the dog a fresh juicy carrot cut in slices like a treat. And it’s important that the slices of carrot are juicy fresh and serve at the moment because the juice is what cleans the teeth and get rid of the bad breath. In my opinion if you don’t have time the most practical thing to do is to give a whole carrot to chew on.

Another reason why a dogs gets really bad breath, it’s because a dog go to the garbage or eat leftovers of food in bad conditions. This is why we need to control that our dog doesn’t go to the garbage and doesn’t eat food in bad conditions.

A third reason for a dog having bad breath, it’s because a dog have diabetes. The bad breath of diabetes is not as strong it has like a fruity salty smell. However, they need to go to the veterinarian as soon as possible to get treated for diabetes.

A fourth reason for a dog having bad breath is because the dog has constipation or some problem going to the bathroom. In this case the bad breath smells like “urinate” or vulgarly “pee”. Anyway; don’t panic there are ways to get rid of this bad breath which I will mention on how to get rid of it further down on this post. For now, you should keep in mind that it’s important to take your dog to the veterinarian urgently for treatment.

The last reason why a dog can get bad breath is because a dog can have some type of Hepatitis sickness. Hepatitis is a serous sickness and should be treated it urgently. This sickness not only gives bad breath but hepatitis also makes a person or dog vomit with frequency too. So it’s very serous.

How to get rid of dog bad breath

1.) There are special dog toothpaste to clean a dog teeth. And that will get rid of a dog bad breath. It’s important that you use special dog toothpaste and not regular human toothpaste because a dog’s toothpaste is proven to stop plaque & tarter buildup and eliminates bad breath.

2.)special dog bones that are made to clean dogs teeth. ( some veterinarians don’t remand it.

3.)A raw carrot- just give a whole raw carrot to your dog and while the dog is chewing or biting the carrot, it cleans it and gets rid of the bad breath. ( vets remand it. It works and is healthy for your dog.)

4.) Another option to get some fresh natural Parsley. Just get 3 or 4 leaves of Parsley, cut in small pieces and place it on top of the dog food. And that will get rid of the bad breath.

Only use 2 or 3 leaves of Parsley cut in small pieces and place on top of the dog food. This should fix a dog’s bad breath.

5.)Also, the applesider vinegar is good for bad breath. Just put 2 or 3 drops of vinegar in water and have the dog drink that water and it will give the dog a nice smell from the mouth.

6.)Another thing you could do is to cut a whole carrot in slices and serve it like a treat. However, the carrot needs to be cut fresh and serve to the dog at the moment. This is because the slices of carrot need to has it’s natural juice. This will clean and get rid of the dog’s bad breath.

7.) Last but not least, use mint. Put one or two drops of mint in water or two or three leaves of mint in water. Let your dog drink that water and that will calm down the bad breath.

Conclusion

There are different reasons why a dog gets bad breath sometimes. And the most frequency and basic reason for bad breath can be for the dog not getting the daily dental care or for going on the garbage. These first most frecuency reason can be prevent it with daily dental care by clean your dog’s teeth with toothpaste or carrot, just like I explain earlier in the article. However, it could be because the dog has a health condition like diabetes. This is why we should always take our dog to the veterinarian for a check up to make sure everything is fine with the dog. Prevention is the best way to keep your dog healthy. Furthermore, we need to keep cleannour dogs mouth as a daily routine. I believe that with a dog’s toothpaste or raw carrots are the best option to keep your dog’s teeth clean. And once in a while, the dog bones to clean teeth is OK too.

Thank you for this article on the possible causes for dogs having bad breath.  I always suspected that it had something to do with their guts, but now I see there other possible causes.  My dog isn’t much into veggies, but I do think that a few drops of mint in the water might be a good alternative.  I’m going to give that a try.  Will any of those extracts sold in supermarkets be good for that purpose?  I don’t want to end up using one that might be harmful.

I’ve had several dogs over the years and have had much experience with doggie bad breath. In fact, one of my Schnauzers had such bad breath due to dental problems that I had to have many of her teeth extracted. After many expensive cleanings at the vet, I’ve found the best thing to do is start a puppy off with regular use of a dog toothpaste and brush. This worked well for my last dog, along with giving him carrots as treats. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful tips in this article. It was very informative.

Hello. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Yes, most deffinitely, preventing  since they are puppies with a dog’s toothpaste & brush and carrots is the best way.   However is good to know the other options so people can do what’s best for them.

Hey thanks for creating such a important post, such posts can be life saving for our babies!

Something as simple as bad breath can be easily overlooked. It can seem harmless therefore ignored which means if it was a serious case it can lead to bad consequences due to no treatment.

thank you for creating educational and essential posts

Sometimes I can’t just stand the breath of our dog (it varies)… so went online and did some research about what to do with the dog with very bad breath…

Actually, the special dog bones might be a good idea.

Also, I have seen that my GF from time to time gives the dog the carrot. Really surprised that you back up the theory… well actually it is not theory anymore right  🙂   (only I thought so)

Anyways, thanks for these tips, I will keep an eye on my dog, I mean the nose,  and see what’s gonna help 🙂

    Cheers
    Mike

Hello Mike the carrot is not a theory, it realy works. NIt’s recomanded by some veterinarian from Europe. Also get him a dog’s toothpaste, it’s special  to stop plaques & bacteria also it eliminates bad breath odor. Also it’s important that you have your dog check by a veterinarian to make sure he doesn’t have a health problem like diabetes Thank you very much for your comment.

You have addressed a very common problem for dog owners, as they will not necessarily know how to deal with the problem. You have given some practical suggestions on how to deal with the problem. I think your post can be helpful to many dog owners.

If your solutions don’t help, it might be time to call the vet to see if there is some other reason for the problem.

Hello Fran, thank you for an engagement comment. Yes, if nothing works you should go to the vet as fast as possible. I wouldn’t wait that long though, prevention is the best way to keep your dog healthy.👍

    Hi Claudia,

Fantastic article. I really enjoyed the rearing.

I raise a german shelter dog, and he has awful breath. I’ve tried practically everything. I brushed his teeth. I gave him pills by recommendation of my veterinarian, and nothing worked. He did a blood test to see if he had diabetes or something else. Luckily, the vet didn’t find anything.

However, he told me that the bad breath doesn’t come from his teeth, but from his stomach and that there isn’t much to do about it. However, I’ll try the tip with the carrot and celery. I just hope he will eat it:)

What if my dog doesn’t want to eat the carrots? Is there a tip you can suggest to make him eat them? I would love to know.

    Thank you

Hello Daniella. If your dg has a stomach problem you might want to watch what he eats. Like going into the garbage and eating.from the garbage. That makes a dog breath smell awful.

Also a boiled potatoes with out salt. It’s awsome  for   dog’s stomach problem. I always give it to my dog .after 24 hours of vomit. Check if it works for your dog’snl stomach problem. It needs to be some smash potatoes with out skin serve with boil chicken. Good luck.

Let me know how it goes. I know it works fine for my dog.
